Really pleased to have access to these photographs which record the dedication day for several community cenotaphs across regional Victoria.

It is important to remember that none of the DEAD were repatriated during or after World War 1.
After Gallipoli, individual communities, resolved to fundraise and commission their own cenotaphs to commemorate the loss of hundreds of husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.

It took me a while to realize, but a memorial’s size was dictated by how many names were needed to be engraved or cast using lead lettering. At Nhill, over 300 names were recorded.

Note how many children are looking toward the camera in these photographs and also the transport of the times.
Cars were relatively new and played havoc with memorials resulting in many being moved from their original central locations.

His nickname is Jack, and he is a marble figure sc

His nickname is Jack, and he is a marble figure sculpted by August Rietman, in 1921.

I came across Jack in a stonemason’s yard in Harcourt, having been decommissioned. Jack was once a digger figure who stood tall on a granite pedestal in Korong Vale until he was vandalised and eventually replaced.

Since his fall, Jack has been ‘resting’ but touring to Bendigo (2022) and Maryborough (2023) and he is currently being prepared for exhibition @shrineofremembrance as the centrepiece for the upcoming IMMORTALS exhibition.

Many thanks to the Wedderburn RSL for loaning Jack for each phase of the project.

IMMORTALS is a portrait study of 66 digger memorials in the State of Victoria. It is an exhibition of screen prints which document almost every digger figure in the state as they appear 100 years on.
The exhibition is open to the public from the 5th of October 2024 to the 13th of April 2025 with an artist talk on the 16th of October from 11 am.

Whittlesea, the last in a series of 66 screen prin

Whittlesea, the last in a series of 66 screen prints for the IMMORTALS exhibition @shrineofremembrance from Saturday the 5th of October.

Whittlesea is unlike any other Digger memorial because I believe it is made from cast concrete, a medium the sculptor August Rietman was exploring at the time.
Rietman a Swiss-German pacifist was the preeminent sculptor of marble figures in the 1920’s and this shift in technique was not only revolutionary but a significant achievement in casting.
Not long after 1926 (when this monument was dedicated) the artist set up his own business casting concrete pots.

Note the oversize tree stump as the leg support, this would have been designed to provide additional strength, and also note how it is smooth it is (no undercuts) to avoid breaking when being removed from the mould.

It also has had several repairs with hands and rifle being replaced… possibly the result of an errant football as was often the story with monuments in main street locations.

In the studio yesterday…

Second last print for the IMMORTALS exhibition. The installation will be at the Shrine of Remembrance from October 5, 2024 to April 13, 2025.

IMMORTALS is a portrait study of the faces of World War 1 Digger memorials in the State of Victoria.
This image is of the figure at Yarram.
It's a marble figure carved by August Rietman a Swiss-German pacificist who emigrated to Australia during the war.

Note the damage to the ear, many of the figures have taken on the appearance of having war wounds.

Immortals is a powerful study of war grief as it was immortalized over a hundred years ago, to encourage reflection as the world once again surges forward with destruction.

A Selection of works from the Home Renovator Suite

A Selection of works from the Home Renovator Suite from 2010.

They are Linocuts using ghost printing, all produced using a bookbinding press. Each work is 14 cm and are early experiments with wallpaper patterning and diagrams. There are 22 in the series, and they speak to the history of wallpaper and relief printing.

Projects like this are doable as a workshop, using the portable press.

So great to be get back to printing my own work! On the drying racks is ‘East Geelong’ one of the last four portraits for the IMMORTALS exhibition at the Shrine of Remembrance (Melbourne) from October the 5th 2024. I’ll update you with information about this 6-year project as we get closer to the launch.

On the walls are studies for two different series of works in development…currently experimenting with halftone and colour combinations using historical references.

Following the very positive responses to my recent Sunday Painters workshop, I am launching Portable Printmaking, a new and flexible art experience where I can bring printmaking to you!

I can provide all the resources to develop a print in just one day using a choice of print mediums. The portable press can be adapted to any social setting or occasion and enables the production of original Linocut, Drypoint, Milk Carton or Etching prints.

Over the weekend, I facilitated a Drypoint and Milk Carton printing workshop for the @sundaypaintersclub.

Many thanks to Graeme Galloway for hosting, and all participants for their enthusiasm and passion to experiment. I am a big fan of milk carton printing because it is accessible as a printing medium, combining drypoint and mono-printing/painterly methodologies…

Came across these two assemblages from 1999... they are reflections on architecture and states of mind, following 6 months travel in Europe.

Both works were produced using cardboard, wax and acrylic on wood, and are 34 cm x 30 cm.

Only a couple of this one left… it’s from the Unissued stamps of Australian History series.

Way back in 2012 I produced this series of 14 Linocuts in an edition of 10 for each.
Most have gone into private collections but some are in public collections like the Bendigo Art Gallery.

The work pictured is titled:

Stamp acknowledging the English botanist who catalogued and marvelled at several species of Flora and Fauna, yet lobbied parliament to establish Australia as a colony for criminals.

It is one of many works from this series that recontextualize Australian history.

This work was developed for ‘Footprints’ a contemporary printmaking exhibition at Counihan Gallery in Brunswick in 2011.

In 1859, twelve pairs of rabbits were imported to Barwon, Victoria, Australia, for the purposes of “Gentlemen’s Sport”. Almost immediately several managed to escape and thanks to a few consistent years of rainfall, they colonised two thirds of Australia within fifty years.

I really enjoyed discussing the many forms of self publishing in the arts with @deborahkleinartist and @lorenacarrington, and it was wonderful to see so many people in attendance and engaged with the speakers. I learned a lot from the discussions and the stall holders and their passions. Thanks to all involved.

As part of the 2024 Melbourne Art Book Fair, Castlemaine Art Museum presents a two-day regional art book fair, including a panel discussion, focussing on artists who self-publish.

Join me in conversation with Naomi Cass (our host), along with Carrington and Deborah Klein, this Sunday, (2nd of June) from 10am.

Images are from INKING UP, an ARTIST BOOK/research project focussing on 16 prisoners incarcerated in the old Castlemaine goal between 1893 and 1902.

The prisoners were chosen based on their tattoos.

Images and notations on each prisoner were sourced from Castlemaine prison records held at the Public Records Office of Victoria.

The leather and cloth bound book is entirely hand-made, and was constructed using linocut, letterpress, pen and ink and traditional bookbinding techniques.

The book was exhibited at the Castlemaine Art Museum in 2015 as part of a self-curated show entitled INKING UP. The curatorial focus was tattoos and linocut printmaking and included works by Rona Green and Deborah Klein.

Join me for a panel conversation with other self-publishing artists at Castlemaine Art Museum.

As part of the 2024 Melbourne Art Book Fair, Castlemaine Art Museum presents a two-day regional art book fair, including a panel discussion that investigates the role of self-publishing artists. Hear from illustrator and writer Lorena Carrington, artist Deborah Klein, and artist Clayton Tremlett.

The panel will discuss a range of self-publishing processes, from high production hand-made artist books through to limited edition zines.
