Introducing Linocut Printmaking for TEACHERS…

Really pleased to announce this one-day workshop for teachers, in partnership with @bendigoartgallery and @latrobe_visual_arts.

This is a teaching focussed workshop, aimed at developing linocut printmaking skills (in linocut portraiture) with additional tips, tricks and a student-centred unit of work thrown in.

As an experienced teacher of 20 years, I am really pleased to be involved in this innovative collaboration…acknowledging it is a VCES subsidised Professional Development progam costing just $20 per ticket.

When: Sun 16th March from 9.30am to 4pm.

Spent yesterday morning with Karen McMullan @shrineofremembrance filming content for the upcoming documentary about the IMMORTALS project.

Karen is renowned documentary filmmaker, with her recent filmic work Ag Fab – From Paddock to Catwalk a finalist in the 2024 Cannes World Film Festival category.

Ag Fab is currently showing at film festivals in Berlin, Rome and Malta.

Also pleased to be informed that IMMORTALS is currently listed as a ‘What’s on in Melbourne’ event, which you can experience at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne until April 13, 2025.

Such is Life… in 2025 Back in 2016, when I firs

Such is Life… in 2025

Back in 2016, when I first exhibited this self-portrait as Ned Kelly etching as part of the Beard and Influence series, I never expected it to return to me in the form of mass-produced cigarette lighters and smoking paraphernalia.

Unfortunately, what you see is digital art theft. It’s far too easy for large faceless companies (Like Boom, the producers of these lighters) to steal imagery and reproduce it for profit with complete disregard for copyright law.

Ironically… if I steal one of these lighters and get caught, I would be charged for theft, while these unscrupulous companies continue to openly misappropriate imagery knowing they will be difficult to prosecute.

On the other hand, I am also amused that my image is out there free ranging, engaging different audiences… in the guise of Ned Kelly… which was the intent in making the series… to question male identity and heroic masculinity.

Recently I was invited by Andrew Stephens, of IMPRINT, (the Print Council of Australia magazine), to discuss my working process in the production of IMMORTALS. An experiment with a mirrored surface behind a screen print on glass.

The image is adapted from the only studio portrait of my sister when she was 3 and I was 6.

I have added a couple of angles to emphasize the reflective quality of the surface, and the original 11cm x 14 cm photo.

What an excellent screen-printing experience!
We explored a range of materials and techniques including printing on calico, paper, linen and glass.
What you see are images of my sister and I when I was six, printed via a halftone screen, papercut stencils and hand printing processes.

Thrilled to announce that ‘In Essence’ opens to the public this Friday, the 8th of November @queenscliffgallery.

Pleased to be in esteemed company in such a beautiful gallery.

A brief statement regarding my works reads:

Pushing the boundaries of printmaking was part of the objective in making "An exploration of the Square using the colours of a Galah”. Working on a transparent substrate and layering in reverse, I wanted to rely entirely on the colours of the Galah as the vehicle for the composition.
